The Gathering Place provides an opportunity for socialization, physical movement, and fun activities for individuals experiencing memory loss due to Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. It is a monthly program that also offers respite care to caregivers with loved ones experiencing these types of conditions. For 3½ hours, St. John Vianney’s caring and supportive volunteers host an exciting morning of fun, socialization, games, singing, exercise, crafts, entertainment and lunch so that caregivers may enjoy time away from the demands of caregiving. This time away gives the primary caregiver respite from the challenges of “round the clock” caregiving. This special caring ministry is provided at no cost to all who attend.
Many studies have shown the importance of mental stimulation for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, especially with persons in the early stages of memory loss. Remaining mentally, socially and physically active by participating in activities that engage the senses often spark memories, foster a sense of well-being and may help to prolong independence and participation in activities of daily living. We encourage you to seek out these opportunities as early as possible for optimum benefit.
St. John Vianney is one of the participating congregations that share in this ministry sponsored by Interfaith CarePartners. We invite you to join us for a morning of fun, fellowship, and meeting new caring friends. For more information, or to register your loved one to attend, please contact the Social Services Office at 281.497.4434.
The Gathering Place always needs new volunteers. We are looking for men and women who can donate 3½ hours once a month to assist with our special friends. We are also searching for anyone who is bilingual as several of our participants speak Spanish. The only skill required is the desire to have fun and interact with those in attendance. We believe this ministry is as rewarding and meaningful to us as it is to those we serve. Please join us by contacting our Program Coordinator, Glorivel.
“The Gathering is a life saver for me and my mom. The volunteers are all just wonderful. Everyone is so caring. The Gathering is one of my mom’s ONLY social outlets. Everyone is so caring and treats her so well. The Gathering has contributed to my mom’s health in a positive way. I have learned so much from this process. The volunteers are the BEST.”
