Spiritual Adoption

God creates and forms every child with a vocation and a plan. During October (Respect Life Month), SJV’s Respect Life Ministry launched our second Spiritual Adoption program. Parishioners have the opportunity to “spiritually” adopt a child who is newly conceived. Not all newly conceived babies are allowed to be born. In fact, 4,000 babies lose their lives to abortion each day. After the launch of the program, we will feature monthly reports describing your spiritually adopted baby’s development and plans for a celebration within the next nine months.

Month IX

“I praised you, so wonderfully you made me: wonderful are your works! My very self you knew” – Psalm 139:14

“Here I am!”

It is time for your spiritually adopted baby to be born. Even in this late stage of development, some babies are being aborted in a procedure known as partial birth abortion. After birth he will continue the human growth process for many years to come. God bless you for your prayers, and thank you for participating in our Spiritual Adoption program!

Although much of the work of our Respect Life Ministry is devoted to protecting the most innocent lives from abortion, our work cannot and does not stop with them. We invite you to consider the Respect Life dimension in other areas of our society, such as end of life care, euthanasia, human trafficking, immigration, prisons, homelessness, abuse, addition, and so many others.

It seems fitting that our Spiritual Adoption program is concluding just as the Fortnight for Freedom is starting.  When faced with a society – and at times a government – that constantly attacks and undermines the dignity of the human person and the rights of so many to advocate for and defend it, let us work together in rebuilding a culture of life in our society; beginning with prayer but also through service, advocacy and education.  Let us also celebrate life and the joys that come from opening our hearts to it!

In the words of Debra Lieberg, Respect Life Coordinator of the Diocese of Superior, Wisconsin, “Each and every person is made in the image and likeness of God; each and every person deserves respect. Let us stand together as sons and daughters of God and shine His light every day in all we do for His honor and glory.”

Taking part in our Spiritual Adoption Program is easy!
  • Pledge to pray daily for 9 months for a baby who is in danger of abortion. Pledge cards are available at the Social Service Ministries office.
  • While the “spiritually adopted child” may remain unknown, God knows who the child is. If you’d like, you can give the child for whom you are praying a name.
  • Pray together as a family for your spiritually adopted child as much as possible.
  • Follow the development of your baby here or in the bulletin.
  • Complete the form below to let us know you would like to participate:

Month VIII

“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”- John, 10:10

“God…from my mother’s womb had set me apart and called me through his grace.” –St Paul to the Galatians, 1:15

“I like to listen to my Mommy’s voice”

In the last two months the baby continues to gain weight. She is developing a layer of fat that will keep her warm after she is born. Her lungs are now fully developed and capable of making the transition to breathing air.

Month VII

“Your eyes foresaw my actions: in your book all are written down: my days were shaped, before one came to be.”- Psalm 139

It’s the last trimester! Your spiritually adopted baby has grown longer than the mother’s uterus, so he has to get in what is called a typical fetal position, with his thighs bent onto his stomach and chest.  The baby can still move and flex his limbs, though, and he may seem more active at some times of the day than at others.

Beginning this month, the baby uses all four senses. He can see, hear, taste, touch, cough, yawn, and hiccup. He now recognizes his mother’s voice. During this time he will also receive antibodies from his mother protecting him from a wide variety of diseases.

At the end of the seventh month, the baby weighs about three pounds and is about 11 inches long.

Month VI

“Even all the hairs of your head are counted,” Matthew 10:30

“I am sitting up straight now”

At 6 months, your baby is now 11-14 inches long and weighs 1 ½ Ibs. She sits straight now to accommodate her internal organs which have moved into the final place in her tiny body. She responds to sounds. Fine hair grows on eyebrows and head. Babies born at this age have survived.

God knows everything about us, down to the most intimate, innumerable details.

Month V

“I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Choose life, then, that you and your descendants may live”, Deuteronomy 31:19

“Mommy felt me kick”

Your spiritually adopted baby is now 20 weeks old. She is 10-12 inches long (the length of a ruler) and weighs about a pound. Sleeping habits appear.  Her mother can feel her move and stretch.  She is big and strong enough to kick hard against the outside uterine wall and dent it.  Each side of the brain has a billion nerve cells now.  Babies born at this age have survived.

We are mid-way through the pregnancy now. Your prayers have helped your baby’s mother continue with her pregnancy and seek the help she needs.

Month IV

“Thus says the Lord who made you, your help, who formed you from the womb,” Isaiah 44:2.

Thank you for responding to our Spiritual Adoption program. It is never too late to join us in spiritually adopting an unborn child and praying for him/her.  At four months old, your spiritually adopted baby is about 5 1/2 inches long and weighs approximately 5 oz.

At 13 Weeks: Fine facial hair such as eyelashes and eyebrows begin to grow. The baby can swallow.
At 15 Weeks:  The production of nerve cells intensifies and peaks within the next few weeks.
At 16 Weeks: Nostrils and toenails become visible. The vocal cords are formed, but without air, the baby cannot cry.  Rapid eye movement can be detected—a sign that your baby is   dreaming.

As the first 4 months of life draw to a close, the child’s unique fingerprints have formed. Her sense of hearing is developing.  She can grasp with her hands, swim, turn somersaults, and suck her thumb.

“Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion.”

Month III

“You formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb,”  Psalm 139: 13.

Thank you for responding to our Spiritual Adoption program.  It is never too late to join us in spiritually adopting an unborn child and praying for him/her.  At three months old, your spiritually adopted baby is about 3 inches long and weighs approximately 1 ounce.

At 9 WeeksFingers can bend and grasp. Fingernails are forming.
At 10 Weeks: The body is sensitive to touch.
At 11 Weeks: The baby makes facial expressions and can even smile.

As the first 3 months of life draw to a close, the child shows vigorous activity.  He or she can kick, turn, curl and fan fingers and toes, open mouth, and press lips together.  He or she is beginning to practice breathing.

“Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion.”

Month II

“My bones were not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, fashioned as in the depths of the earth,” Psalm 139: 15.

Thank you for responding to our Spiritual Adoption program. It is never too late to join us in spiritually adopting an unborn child and praying for him/her. At two months old, the developing baby is now called a fetus from the Latin meaning “bringing forth” or “offspring.”

At Day 35:  The eyes, nose, and mouth are taking shape.
At Day 45:  The teeth begin to appear.
By Day 50:  The skeleton begins to change from cartilage to bone.

As the first 2 months of life draw to a close, the child is well-proportioned and every organ of the body is now present. The heart beats steadily, while the stomach, liver, and kidneys are functioning now as well. The baby’s brain stem is fully formed. Electrical impulses in the brain indicating organized brain activity can be detected and recorded. Deliberate muscular movement and reactions to external stimuli can now take place. The baby is capable of independent motion governed by his/her own brain.

“Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion.”

Month I

“You formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb,” Psalm 139: 13.

Thank you for responding to our Spiritual Adoption program. It is never too late to join us in spiritually adopting an unborn child and praying for him/her.

At Day 18: The baby’s heart is forming and the eyes are developing.
At Day 24: The baby’s heart begins beating!
At Day 28: The baby’s muscles are developing along his future spine. His arms and legs are developing.

During this first amazing 30 days of life, the child has grown 10,000 times its size at conception. The baby is now 1/4 inch long. The brain has human proportions. Blood flows through the baby’s veins (but, stays separate from the mother’s blood).

“Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion.”
