Michelangelo, the Artist – Part I
Catholicism: The Pivotal Players Series
The commentary begins by referring to the brave witness of Saint John Damascene, the monk who opposed attempts by the Byzantine Emperor Leo, to obliterate images of God the Father and God the Son from Christian Churches. Michelangelo Buonarroti was born on March 6, 1475 and by the age of 15 was studying the art of sculpture in the Garden of San Marco, a school for artists fostered by Lorenzo de Medici, de facto ruler of Florence. At the age of 21 he received a commission to sculpt the Pieta.
