Michelangelo, the Artist – Part II
Catholicism: The Pivotal Players Series
Art is both our play and our offering to God. Holy Mother Church is not accidentally but naturally the mother of arts, as she was the mother of Michelangelo. Michelangelo shows us that there can be no true humanism without God because man was made by God, for God, and in his image. In 1508 Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the newly restored Sistine Chapel in Rome however, Michelangelo had little experience as a painter and even less in the delicate medium of fresco. Thus the temperamental Michelangelo was reluctant to take on the commission and stormed away from Rome, incurring Julius’s wrath; eventually he was persuaded to return and began the masterpiece, completed in 1512.
