Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom

The book of Acts reveals how Christ’s Kingdom on earth is empowered to carry on his work in the world. Acts reveals the Church, enlivened by the Holy Spirit, teaching, preaching, healing, and restoring the marginalized in the same way that Jesus did. The Book of Acts provides an historic framework for understanding the rest of the New Testament. Paul’s letters in particular come alive in a new way when they are read within the context of the Acts narrative.

Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come

The Apocalypse, or Revelation to John, the last book of the Bible, is one of the most difficult to understand because it abounds in unfamiliar and extravagant symbolism, which at best appears unusual to the modern reader. Symbolic language, however, is one of the chief characteristics of apocalyptic literature, of which this book is an outstanding example. Composed as resistance literature to address a crisis, the Book of Revelation cannot be adequately understood except against the historical background that occasioned its writing.
