The Sola System

The solas of the Protestant Reformation, sola scriptura, sola fide, sola gratia, (sola Christus, Soli Deo Gratia) are a set of doctrines considered central to the pivotal period of change in the 16th century. Each sola represents a key belief held by reformers in contrast to the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church. What does each sola mean; why were they divisive and do they remain so today?

Presented by Fr. John Morfin, Pastor of St. John Vianney Parish from 1996-2008. He entered the Jesuit Novitiate in 1954, earned a B.A. in classical languages, an S.T.B. in theology, an M.A. in Psychology and a Ph.L in Philosophy and was ordained to the priesthood in Omaha, in 1967. In 1975 Fr. Morfin moved to Houston to serve as Director of Guidance and Counseling at Strake Jesuit College Prep. In 1983 he became a priest of the Diocese of Galveston– Houston and served as Assistant Pastor at St. Ambrose Parish and later, as Pastor of St. Benedict and St. Augustine.
