A Call of Their Own:
The Role of The Permanent Diaconate in the Church
Even after 50 years the permanent diaconate still confuses some people. A Deacon is not intended to be a mini-priest, substitute priest or a super lay person. Deacons are ordained clergy but not solely parish-based ministers. What did Vatican II envision when it restored the Permanent Diaconate? Why does a Deacon’s unusual position -a clergyman in a parish but also in the workplace and at home with a family- remain a source of confusion for lay and clergy alike?
Presented by Greg Stokes, Permanent Deacon assigned to St. John Vianney parish. Greg was born in Knoxville, TN and grew up in nearby Oak Ridge. He graduated cum laude in 1989 from Austin Peay University with a B.B.A. in Finance and Marketing. Greg and his wife, Robyn, moved to Houston in 1998. He began Diaconate formation in 2011 and was ordained in 2017. Along with Robyn, Greg is currently employed with Hancock Mortgage Partners, L.L.C.
