The Gathering Place
The Gathering Place is a monthly program that offers respite care to caregivers with loved ones experiencing memory loss or dementia from conditions such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Stroke. For 3½ hours, St. John Vianney’s caring and supportive volunteers host an exciting morning of fun, socialization, games, singing, exercise, crafts, entertainment and lunch so that caregivers may enjoy time away from the demands of caregiving. This time away gives the primary caregiver respite from the challenges of “round the clock” caregiving. This special caring ministry is provided at no cost to all who attend.
Many studies have shown the importance of mental stimulation for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, especially with persons in the early stages of memory loss. Remaining mentally, socially and physically active by participating in activities that engage the senses often spark memories, foster a sense of well-being and may help to prolong independence and participation in activities of daily living. We encourage you to seek out these opportunities as early as possible for optimum benefit.
September 2011 marked the 5 year anniversary of dedicated service to over 80 families coping with memory loss. Care Team volunteers have donated approximately 7,073 hours of compassionate care and remain committed in responding to the special needs of caregivers and their loved ones.
St. John Vianney is one of 57 participating congregations that share in this ministry sponsored by Interfaith CarePartners. We invite you to join us for a morning of fun, fellowship, and meeting new caring friends. A Caregiver support group (Common Ground) is also available on the same day. For more information, or to register your loved one to attend, please contact Tom Breaux at #713-682-5995 or .
The Gathering Place also always needs new volunteers. We are looking for men and women who can donate 3½ hours once a month to assist with our special friends. We are also searching for anyone who is bilingual as several of our participants speak Spanish. The only skill required is the desire to have fun and interact with those in attendance. We invite you to celebrate our 5th anniversary and visit our program. We believe this ministry is as rewarding and meaningful to us as it is to those we serve. Please join us by contacting Deborah Montez, Director of Social Ministries at .
