We also need volunteers to help clean up and demo houses all week. On Saturdays and Sundays, clean-up and demo volunteers meet at the Basketball Court at 8am.. Make sure you wear old clothing; we suggest long sleeve shirts and pants.
We’ll supply the water and nourishment.
A note from Father Troy:
Dear Friends in Christ:
You may have already received a request asking for volunteers to assist in our recovery efforts this weekend. Our fellow parishioners desperately need our help and they need it now. I ask that if you are able, that you please help us help our neighbors in this great time of need. Invite your friends from work or from school or from other parishes to join us. I cannot describe how much your help is needed and what a difference it will make to those who have suffered so much. This is truly God’s work and He is calling each of us to serve and be his instruments of care and love.
Thank you for your faith, love and devotion and response to this urgent request.
Fr. Troy
City of Houston: Debris Pick-Up Schedule
On Saturday, September 16 and Sunday, September 17, 2017, the City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department will be collecting storm debris. This collection will be conducted based on the following neighborhoods:
- Nottingham Forest
- Memorial Glen
- Fonn Villas
- Gessner, Memorial
- Briar Park corridors
Residents will need to have all debris curbside by 7 a.m. on the designated day of collection listed above for their area. Items should be segregated into six (6) piles away from fire hydrants, mailboxes, power lines and other objects that will hamper safe pickup.
Debris separation piles:
- Normal Household Trash – Normal household trash and bagged debris of any kind will not be picked up with debris as part of this program. You should continue to follow your normal garbage schedule.
- Vegetative Debris – leaves (do not put in bags), logs, plants, tree branches.
- Construction & Demolition Debris – building materials, carpet, drywall, furniture, lumber, mattresses and plumbing.
- Appliances & White Goods – air conditioners, dishwashers, freezers, refrigerators, stoves, washers, dryers and water heaters.
- Electronics – computers, radios, stereos, televisions, other devices with a cord.
- Household Hazardous Waste – cleaning supplies, batteries, lawn chemical, oils, oil-based paints, stains and pesticides.
Also, remove all parked vehicles from the streets when debris crews are working in your neighborhood. Debris should be placed close to the side of the road away from mailboxes, trees, meters, fire hydrants and other structures. Please do not place debris in the roadway. If debris crews are unable to pass safely along the streets, they will not be able to remove your debris.

Note #5 from Fr. Troy
Dear friends in Christ,
I pray this message finds you safe. The hurricane and flooding has dramatically impacted all of our parish. We are struggling to get back on our feet. I ask that you please pray for all of our parishioners and neighbors who have lost so much – homes, cars, possessions. Thank the Lord, we have had no reported loss of life, but many are suffering greatly. As so many of our staff, parish leaders and volunteers are flood victims or had to evacuate, our efforts to mobilize our relief efforts have been hampered. Instead of giving assistance we have been receiving assistance.
While the parish buildings were spared major damage, the flood waters took over part of the property and we had no power for nearly a week. CenterPoint Energy, in an effort to restore electric power to thousands of homes in our area, has been building an emergency mobile substation on our property. This has necessitated the closing of our parish campus to all parishioners and visitors.
It is our hope to offer the weekend schedule of Masses and Confessions and, to open the campus and parish offices; resume the daily Mass schedule and other activities on Monday, September 11. This is dependent on the work of CenterPoint as all of us wish to put safety first.
We will continue to place updates for all of our activities, ministries and liturgies on our parish website and Facebook page. We will be posting our volunteer and recovery efforts as well. Please continue to pray for one another and to reach out in any way possible to assist your fellow parishioners and neighbors.
During these trying times know that the Lord who is our good and gentle shepherd is with us and is guiding us to safety under his loving care.
Fr. Troy
Note #4 from Fr. Troy
Bringing Power Back to 5,700 Homes
CenterPoint Energy has located an Emergency Mobile Substation on our property. This is to assist in restoring electric power to thousands of area homes. As the work is hazardous and there are many workers and vehicles on campus, it is for safety reasons that the campus remains closed.
Note #3 from Fr. Troy
For safety reasons all Masses and confessions at SJV are cancelled this weekend.
Please pray for all those suffering and those working on recovery efforts.
Please attend Mass at neighboring parishes. The parish remains closed until further notice. To help on relief efforts, please contact Catholic Charities.
