The Blessings Exceeded the Waters

Dear Friends in Christ: This week marked the two year anniversary of Hurricane Harvey and the flooding that followed. For most Houstonians, this is but a memory of a terrible event that affected our city. For others it was a horrible time when they saw their homes flooded, the possessions of a lifetime lost, followed by a test of patience (and sanity) and the trial of rebuilding. There are many, however, including many in this parish, for whom the nightmare has yet to end. After two years they have not yet been able to return to their homes, they are still...

How You can Make a Difference

Dear Friends in Christ: Even though the heat is going to be around for a bit longer, summertime is coming to an end. That means things are really picking up around the parish. Obviously, the program that touches the most parish families is our Religious Education for Youth (CCE). We are blessed to have over 1300 children involved in our Religious Education program, each child learning and growing in the love of God. We are also blessed with hundreds of great and devoted catechists and helpers in addition to our dedicated staff. Yet with all of these wonderful servant disciples, did...

The Importance of Forming Disciples

Dear Friends in Christ: This weekend after each of our Masses we will have registration for our Religious Education program for our school children and youth. This is vital and absolutely essential to our Church and to the youth. Jesus commanded us in his last moment before ascending to the Father to “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you!” (Mt 28:19-20) This obligation is indeed a serious one that cannot be taken lightly....

Be 100% Catholic

Dear Friends in Christ: I certainly hope that you enjoyed the wonderful feast day celebrations. My sincere thanks to all who helped make it a wonderful success; those involved with the liturgies and those involved in the festivities, (cooking, serving, entertainment, cleaning, etc.). To all of you my sincere thanks and appreciation. Yet the feast has not ended as we are still in the midst of offering our 5000 hours of adoration and 10,000 rosaries for the intentions of our parish. Please come and be part of our offering of prayer. In last week’s bulletin, I mentioned four actions we are embarking...

Outreach, Engagement, Discipleship, Leadership

Dear Friends in Christ: Happy Feast Day!  This weekend, we celebrate the feast of St. Jean Marie Vianney, Curé (pastor) of Ars and our heavenly patron to whom our parish is dedicated.  Today, as always, we seek his intercession and prayers to help us on our earthly pilgrimage.  In today’s Collect Prayer, we pray, “Almighty and Merciful God, who made the priest St. John Vianney wonderful in his pastoral zeal, grant, we pray that through his intercession and example we may in charity win brothers and sisters for Christ!”   Oh, how we need God’s wonderful grace to do this even more...

Feast Day Prayer Intentions

Dear Friends in Christ: Next Sunday, we celebrate the feast of our heavenly patron, St. John Vianney. We are also celebrating the 53rd anniversary of the founding of our parish. For the feast day, we will of course have mass, and after the 9:30, 11:00, 12:30 and 2:00 masses we will have an old fashioned parish cook out! There will be entertainment, food and fun for everyone! It will all be free. Beginning on the Feast day, we will then begin ten special days of prayer. We hope to offer 5,000 hours of Eucharistic Adoration and 10,000 rosaries in thanksgiving for...

Responsible Stewardship

Dear Friends in Christ: With June 30, the parish ended the fiscal year. We are still in the process of closing out the books for the month, the quarter and the year. Final numbers should be in shortly. As in the past, we will give financial figures and other data in our Annual Report to the parish in the Fall. This report will be posted on the website for all interested parishioners. The good news is that we are in the black financially. This was not a given. As I have informed the parish...

St. John Vianney Feast Day

Dear Friends in Christ: On Sunday, August 4, our parish will celebrate the annual feast day of our patron saint, St. John Vianney, the Curé (pastor) of Ars. Each year the entire church throughout the world recalls the wonderful life of this extraordinary human being who loved God with such fervor and gave his whole life to being a holy priest. St. John Vianney brought God’s love and mercy to people and he brought people to God. This past spring, I along with a group of our parishioners were able to spend a few days living and praying in the beautiful...

Making a New Generation of Saints

Dear Friends in Christ: As we have said “Thank You” and “Farewell” to Fr. Clark, we now say “Welcome” to Fr. Richard Hinkley. A native Houstonian, Fr. Richard grew up in St. Francis de Sales parish. He attended the University of Notre Dame and then went to law school at UH. It was while in law school that he discerned a call to the priesthood and entered the seminary, first attending Holy Trinity Seminary and then The Pontifical North American College in Rome. Fr. Richard has theological degrees from the Gregorian University and from the Pontifical Antheneum...
