Join us on May 23 at 7:30 PM at St. John Vianney Church for Contempo: Musical Exploration – How the Viola Gained Its Voice. This evening of chamber music will feature works by Bruch, Bridge, Clarke, and Penderecki, performed by Merit Rogge, Konrad Rudowicz, and Alona Khopytnets. Reception to follow.
This recital delves into the evolution of the viola as a solo instrument, tracing its journey through hallmark repertoire of the 19th and 20th centuries. It highlights the transformation of the viola’s role, beginning with its use in 19th-century Romantic repertoire, where composers explored its lyrical and introspective qualities while drawing inspiration from the expressive and virtuosic traditions of the violin and cello. The program then follows the viola’s journey into the 20th century, when modern composers began to embrace its uniquely rich timbre, expansive tonal range, and emotive depth, establishing a “viola voice” that transcends its supporting role to embody a singular and compelling solo identity.
